Fencing
Fencing is a combat sport in which two athletes face each other using bladed weapons, with the aim of hitting their opponent and scoring points. The three disciplines of modern fencing are foil, épée, and sabre, each with its own specific rules and characteristics. During a bout, two fencers compete on a strip, attempting to land valid “touches” on their opponent. Individual matches are fenced to 15 points or over three periods of three minutes each. In team events, the total score can reach up to 45 points. Fencing has been part of the Olympic Games since 1896. The three weapons differ in style and target area. Foil is a light thrusting weapon, target limited to the torso. Épée is a heavier thrusting weapon, target is the entire body. Sabre is a cutting and thrusting weapon, target area is above the waist.
