Volleyball

Volleyball is a team sport played by two teams of six players on a court divided by a net. The objective is to send the ball into the opponent’s court so that it cannot be returned. It was invented in 1895 in the United States by William G. Morgan, initially under the name “Mintonette”. The current name comes from the continuous volleying of the ball. Each team may touch the ball up to three times to send it back over the net. A set is won at 25 points (with at least a two-point advantage), and matches are played in a best-of-five sets format. Volleyball has been an Olympic sport since 1964 and is now one of the most popular and spectacular team sports in the world. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, volleyball has a strong tradition and wide participation across the region, both at youth and competitive levels.
